A new November on the Clyde
The glower of winter sun on its face
This cruel edifice is eating those I love
From the road I see it loom
Dark outline against the hills beyond,
The river and the ghostly town
They don’t make things here anymore
No ships or sowing machines
No sugar now, nothing sweet
A dark front; nothing like a welcome here
More like a cold monolith on the moon
Waiting to swallow another soul
But not this time – I will not allow it this time.
